And how about after another year? I’m thinking about getting one of these stoves. But the cheap prices has scared me off a little. I’m used to seeing 2-3 times the prices for a stove with this much capacity.

Shy of the ethics or morality of how Facebook is handling privacy, I guess I just see the solution as not giving them any information you don’t want shared elsewhere. But I know your beef with FB is more than just how it has affected you.

I don’t assume any information I put on-line is private. Some sites are (seemingly) more secure than others, and Facebook has clearly had their troubles in that area.

Facebook’s business is personal data and information. I simply try to play within their world to get what I need and nothing more. When I can no longer get what I want, or everyone leaves (a la MySpace), then I’ll be leaving too.

I changed my name to Rufus Buford. I have no idea if that will actually do anything to protect the privacy of my information or not. Spokeo still finds my real name. It doesn’t find Rufus Buford though. At least not yet.

I may still kill the facebook account.

Yeah, Susan, any information you already have put into the system will continue to live on in their database. I don’t believe for a second that deleting the account will actually delete your data, but, it more data from being added going forward.

To answer your question about pop-ups… That isn’t really part of what I’m worried about with Facebook. If you’re getting lots of pop-ups and crap on your computer, there is probably some other cause that is not related to Facebook.

Regardless of whether or not I delete my account, I’m sure that anything I have ever posted on facebook or in private facebook messages will be retained and used in any way that Zuckerberg thinks will turn a profit. Technically I think facebook automatically has a copywrite on every photo on their site, so I KNOW they’ll continue to use those as they please.

I see a lot of downsides to leaving facebook. For example:

1) It’s a convenient way to stay in touch with my friends and family and know what’s going on in their lives even through I live on the other side of the world.
2) Until recently I did not own a camera, and all of the pictures I have of my travels are from other people’s photo albums on facebook.
3) when I start my hostel I would love to send a message out to the hundreds of people I’ve met along the way to use for networking and marketing purposes.

That said, I have trouble with the idea of supporting a company that doesn’t respect me or my privacy, and I am strongly considering leaving as well.

Instead of quitting facebook what if we all simply changed all of our contact information to alias names. Then if anyone searched for us they wouldn’t be likely to find any personal information. (From this point forward you may refer to me as Rufus Buford if you like).

Hey Matt! Thanks for the overview of Facebook. Like you I’ve never posted anything I wouldn’t show or shout from a rooftop. I pretty much always figured they were compiling quite a list to sell to someone. The truly enlightening part was the observation about Mark Zuckerberg. You’re correct in thinking I’d rather not stay this isn’t smelling right – we’ve all met those kinds. For people who stay is it continual pop-up msgs and crap? Also, I believe, correct me if I’m wrong please – won’t they STILL have all of every keystroke and every direction our messages took as well as each person’s pod of friends and interests?

Like you, I try not to do anything on Facebook that I will regret later. I also go to great lengths to keep things as private as possible. But why support a place whose interest seems to be solely about duping personal info out of its clients?

Dude, I’ll totally take advantage of your “studio” for doing voice overs for the radio show I’ll go with the pizza & beer payment plan. And feel free to use the ones you’ve already done as portfolio type stuff. You have a good voice for speaking…it comes across well in audio/radio format.
